U.S. Roasters: Your Tariff Refund Process

The U.S. Supreme Court struck down the IEEPA tariffs and are potentially subject to refunds. Algrano has already filed the claimback on your behalf: no action needed on your end. Here's exactly what happens next.

The seven months between April and November 2025 were tough. Tariffs added real costs to your green coffee purchases, and the uncertainty made planning even harder. By late November 2025, those tariffs were lifted. Most origins cleared on November 13, and Brazil on November 20. And now, the money you paid during that period is potentially subject to refunds.

On February 20, 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court considered the tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) unconstitutional. The same day, Executive Order 14389 — "Ending Certain Tariff Actions" (91 FR 9437) was signed, officially revoking the executive orders that had established those tariffs.

If you contracted coffee that was imported through Algrano between April 5th, 2025 and November 12th, 2025, those duties were already paid at the time of entry. Due to this pre-payment, in case you are releasing a coffee after the tariffs lifting, but was imported in the tariffs period, unfortunately, you will still receive a tariff invoice.

We have already filed the claimback on your behalf with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). You don't need to do anything. When the money arrives, we will reach out and issue your credit note. We don’t have a concrete timeline yet, but we will update you as soon as we get more information. That's our commitment to you.

FAQ

Do I need to file a claim myself?

No. Algrano has already initiated the claimback process with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on your behalf. When we receive the reimbursed funds for your shipments, we will proactively issue the corresponding credit notes to you.

When will I get my money back?

The U.S. government launched the first phase of the refund process on April 20, 2026. CBP estimates that once a claim is accepted, refunds take 60 to 90 days to be issued, but this varies by shipment. Given the high volume of claims currently being processed, the full timeline may run into 2027. We will update you as soon as funds are secured for your shipments.

Why am I still receiving tariff invoices for coffee I'm releasing from the warehouse?

If the coffee was imported into the U.S. between April 5 and November 12, 2025, those duties were already paid at the time of entry. You will still see a tariff invoice when releasing that coffee. Once the government reimburses those specific tariffs, we will issue you a credit note for the full amount.

Will new contracts be subject to tariffs?

No. Following the Supreme Court ruling, IEEPA tariffs are no longer collected. Green coffee is also explicitly exempt from the Section 122 import surcharges introduced in late February 2026. Any new contracts for green coffee sourced from origin will not carry these charges.

Is there anything I should do right now?

Nothing at all. Algrano will contact you proactively once we have an update or a payment ready for your shipments.
