What’s driving coffee roasters in 2023?
Coffees that are accessible to drink and easy on the wallet are in high demand among specialty coffee roasters in Europe and the USA. With global inflation and a cost of living crunch, 45% of roasters said their customers are looking for more affordable options without sacrificing quality.
Remember the Brazilian frost in 2021? It sent green coffee prices soaring. Now, rising overhead costs are what’s pushing up the prices of roasted coffee and coffee drinks in cafés.
These are just a few highlights from Algrano’s third Market Trends Report, which dives into the economic and environmental issues influencing how roasters in Europe—and now the USA—source their coffee.
Inside the report
The Algrano Market Trends Report 2023, crafted by writer and researcher Erika Koss, is packed with insights from 86 independent roasteries. We also got the scoop from green coffee buyers at top companies like Onyx Coffee Lab, Equator Coffees, Bonanza Coffee Roasters, Johan & Nyström, and Coutume.
Everyone has been fighting to survive, to keep our heads above water. It’s finally settling down a bit. But now everything costs more: green coffee, shipping, staffing. We can only raise prices to a certain amount before our customers go somewhere else.

Insights from Industry Leaders
Nearly 60% of roasters sourced more green coffee despite higher prices. However, global inflation has made 61% of them more cautious about future purchases.
Quality remains the top priority, but building relationships with producers is also crucial. Almost all roasters prioritise quality, and 84% believe long-term partnerships with producers are essential.
For 45% of roasters, consumers are looking for more accessible coffees in taste and price. Some are simplifying their menus, reducing the number of Single Origin coffees, or offering less complex or darker roasts as affordable options.
Requests for sustainable, ethical, or transparent coffee are a big driver for 51% of roasters. Nearly half invested more in direct trade and transparency, asking suppliers more about transparency and traceability.
We have four sourcing values, and one is collaboration. We think that’s the only way transparency will be useful. Collaboration is when you can have back and forth conversation about things like quality, and if we’re using the right vocabulary to give each other information.
