U.S. Roasters: Your Tariff Refund Update

Tariffs paid on green coffee imports are approved for refund. Here's what that means for how and when your money comes back, and next steps.

In April 2026, we told you Algrano had already filed your tariff claimback with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and that we'd update you the moment we had real news. We do now.

We've received confirmation that the tariffs paid on green coffee moved through Algrano have been approved for return. Here's what we can confirm today, and what happens between now and when your refund reaches you.

What we can confirm

  • The tariffs you paid are coming back. That part isn't in question anymore. What's left is finishing the paperwork on our end.
  • Financing costs aren't part of this refund. When we paid tariffs on your behalf ahead of invoicing you, a small financing cost was added to cover the time we carried that cost for you. The government's refund covers the tariff itself, not that financing — so the tariff is what we're passing back. In almost every case, this difference comes to a few dollars per shipment.
  • Every tariff invoice we issued gets closed out with a credit note. What happens to that credit is what differs:
    • If you have open orders or invoices with Algrano, it's applied straight against your balance — nothing further for you to do.
    • If your account is closed, no coffee left with us and nothing in the pipeline, that credit converts into a direct bank transfer, and we'll reach out to arrange it.
  • You still don't need to do anything. If we need bank details from you for a direct transfer, we'll ask you for them directly when the time comes.

What happens next

Once we've verified the numbers for your specific shipments, we'll reach out to you directly with your exact amount and next steps. We know waiting is the hard part when it's real money you're owed. We'd rather take the extra time to get your number right than rush it and have to correct it later.

FAQ: US Tariffs Refund Update

Do I need to file anything or contact Algrano?

No. We filed the claimback on your behalf, as we told you in the spring, and we'll reach out to you proactively once your refund is ready.

Will I get back everything I paid?

You'll get the full tariff amount back. The financing cost added when we paid tariffs on your behalf ahead of your invoice isn't part of the government's refund, so it isn't part of ours either — a small amount in nearly every case.

Why does my invoice still show a tariff line, even though the tariffs were lifted?

If your coffee was imported through Algrano during the tariff window, the duty was paid when it entered the country — not when it's released to you. So you may still see that line on invoices for coffee you're releasing now. Those duties are included in this refund too: once it clears, you'll get a credit note for that as well.

How will I actually receive the money?

Every tariff invoice you paid gets a credit note issued against it. If you have open business with Algrano — for example, an open invoice, coffee due to be released soon, or inventory still sitting with us — that credit applies straight to your balance. If we are no longer holding coffee for you, and are therefore not able to credit the refund against future invoices, we can make a direct bank transfer instead.

When will I get my refund?

We don't have an exact date yet, and we'd rather not guess. We're actively working through verification now, and we'll come to you as soon as your number is confirmed.

I don't have an active account with Algrano anymore. What happens to me?

We'll reach out to you directly to arrange your refund and collect the details we need to send it.
