US tariffs are here. What now?
The US government has introduced new tariffs on imports, including green coffee. These changes will affect almost every origin, except Mexico*, and all roasters importing to the US.
While some things are still uncertain, here’s what we know now, and what it means for you and the producers you source from.
What’s a tariff again?
A tariff is a tax on imports. As of April 5th, 2025, a 10% universal tariff is applied to all imported goods to the USA. On April 9th, a country-specific tariff will hit certain countries with higher rates.
These measures are part of a broader trade agenda from President Trump. Unfortunately, green coffee is not exempt.
The following tariffs apply only to imports into the United States.
What does this mean for you?
Our understanding is that the tariffs will be calculated based on the FOB price that has been agreed upon with the producers.

*Green coffee from Mexico is currently expected to remain exempt, as it falls under the USCMA agreement. However, there is conflicting information and uncertainty regarding whether this exemption will continue.

What does this mean for producers?
We understand this is a challenging situation for roasters, but producers are also affected. These tariffs come at a time when many are already dealing with climate change, low yields, limited access to financing, and market volatility.
Selling to the EU is becoming harder due to EUDR requirements. Now, with the risk of higher prices in the world’s largest coffee market, producers face growing barriers to selling in the West.
Algrano has been supporting producers and roasters through regulatory changes in Europe, and we’ll do the same as tariffs take effect in the US. Our focus remains on building long-term relationships, even in times of uncertainty.

We're here to help you navigate this as best as you can, while also keeping impact on producers to a minimum.
